Why develop a healthy relationships app?

The goal of this project is to work with taitamariki (aged 13-17 years) to develop a healthy relationships app that supports taitamariki to have healthy and safe relationships. The app also provides pathways for friends and whānau to support their taitamariki…

  • Relationships can be complicated. When struggling with relationships, young people don’t always know what to do or where to go for help or what’s okay and what’s not. When they ask adults for help, they are not always taken seriously.
  • Adults don’t always know what to do or say either.
  • Taitamariki have told us that they need good information to help them have healthy safe relationships. Not pamphlets!
  • This app supports both teenage boys and girls.
  • It also has good information for whānau and friends so they can support taitamariki. We all look to our phones to find information these days.
  • We have created this app with taitamariki as we believe that taitamariki know what works for them and what doesn’t.
  • Supporting taitamariki healthy relationships now will support healthy adult relationships that are violence-free in the future.

Kōrerō Mai

  • We have listened to taitamariki across Aotearoa. They have told us a lot about their relationships. About who and how and what they want and need to support them.
  • Taitamariki want the opportunity to interact with a safe online taitamariki community who are interested in supporting each other with the highs and lows that their relationships may present them with in a safe way.
  • In the app taitamariki can create their own relationship values. They can check to see how these values are present or not in their relationship. If they aren’t sure about something that is happening in their relationship they can invite whānau and friends to give their opinions and support in a private way.

Taitamariki Advisory Group (TAG)

These talented and inspirational taitamariki, who are aged between 13-17 years old, are crucial to the app’s development and the project’s success. Their role is to ensure that a young person’s perspective is kept in our mahi. This is what they had to say about what inspired them to be in TAG and what they like about the app. TAG-Video

Community Advisory Group (CAG)

The Community Advisory Group’s (CAG) is made up of nine specialists in this field of mahi. Their role is to support and advise the project team with their knowledge and skills and to support the research team with their tasks of creating, testing and dissemination of the app. CAG also ensures that the Team tikanga is adhered to and that we remain Māori-centred and taitamariki focused. link.

Research Group

This project brings together an interdisciplinary, international team to test effectiveness and to disseminate the Harmonised app to support development of healthy partner relationships among taitamariki. link.

Tikanga (Purpose)

Central to our tikanga is the health and wellbeing of taitamariki and their whānau.

We will:

  • Support young people, in particular taitamariki and their whānau, to define and establish healthy relationships.
  • Co-create a healthy relationship app (Harmonised) that is fun and engages young people, provides appropriate information and advice, using the best available evidence and implementation science.
  • Help friends and whānau to recognise what healthy relationships are, and take young people’s relationships seriously.
  • Provide a mechanism for people to get help that complements the role of friends and whānau.

Kaingākau (The values that inform and guide what we do)

  • Being tika at all times – acting in true and correct ways.
  • Kaitiakitanga – we will care for each other and the young people associated with our research.
  • Manaakitanga – Relationships with fellow team members, young people, schools, parents, and the community must be respectful and caring at all times.
  • The concept of reciprocity will underpin all partnerships and relationships with young people, schools, parents, and the community.
  • Our decisions and actions will be inclusive of young people.
  • We will be clear about the limits of confidentiality to ensure young people’s safety.
  • Safety is a priority at all times.
  • We will conduct our research with scientific integrity.
  • We will be respectful of differences in views and recognise young people’s ability to put into action what they believe is important, we endeavour to respond honestly.
  • Reflexivity will be undertaken with regard to our decisions, actions and the research process.

Tikanga (The right way of doing things)

  • Adhere to Health and Safety protocols to optimise young people’s physical, emotional and cultural wellbeing.
  • Implement the research to a high standard at all times, which meets ethical requirements, decision-aid standards, research conduct standards, and team members’ professional practice standards.
  • Establish and implement a collaborative process, and a feedback loop with young people that includes consultation and co-construction of the app. Establish partnership relationships with schools, communities and taitamariki and their social networks.
  • All members will take responsibility to ensure that their actions and decisions are inclusive of young Māori people.
  • In the dissemination phase of the research, the app will be freely provided to optimise healthy relationships with young people.
  • Ensure the sustainability of the app.

Whanonga Pono (Set principles that we adhere to)

We will ensure that:

  • Our work appreciates taitamariki within context of their whānau and the historical and contemporary influences that they negotiate.
  • Our decision-making and doing the best that we can will be informed by our kaupapa (purpose) and the principles enshrined within Human Rights, the United Nations Rights of Children, United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Peoples Rights, Ethical Research Involving Children (ERIC), Trauma-Informed Care, and our personal integrity.
  • Young people’s health, safety and wellbeing is paramount (physical, emotional, spiritual and whānau).
  • We research WITH young people, NOT on them.
  • We will recognise the diversity (e.g. age, sexual orientation) within young people as a group, and the power differences that exist between them and adults.
  • We will engage reflexively about the various dimensions related to our research (e.g. gender, sexuality, social norms).
  • We recognise Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi and respond using the principles of Partnership, Participation, Protection and Provision, and ensure our research is Māori-centred.
  • We will be culturally responsive.
